Client work

News4You — an independent newsroom that funds itself

Client work, designed and built by Riv Lux Media.

Independent journalism has no advertising department, no CMS team, and no budget for either. What it has is a direct relationship with readers — and the platform's only job is to make that relationship pay for the reporting.

News4You is that platform, built around a single named journalist and the audience that follows them.

What the build has to carry

A personality-led newsroom is not a blog. In one product:

  • Dispatches — the published writing, on a workflow the journalist can run alone
  • Memberships — tiered access, including an all-access tier, as the primary funding line
  • A reader forum — the community layer, which is the actual retention mechanism
  • Live — broadcast, announced and archived alongside the written work
  • Donations — a second, lower-friction funding path for readers who won't subscribe
  • Commerce — the journalist's two published books, routed to their retailer
  • Social integration — a live Instagram feed, because that is where the audience already is

Each of those is a normal feature. Having all of them in a product that one person plus an editor can operate daily is the constraint that shapes every decision.

The design problem: one voice, many surfaces

When the product is a person, the platform cannot feel like software. Every surface — the membership prompt, the forum, the donation ask, the archive — has to sound like the same voice that writes the dispatches, or the whole thing reads as a template someone poured a newsletter into.

That is a content-architecture problem before it is a visual one. The system has to let one person publish across six surfaces without a copywriter standing behind them.

The funding mechanics

The hard part of membership publishing is never the paywall. It is the sequencing: how much a reader gets before the ask, when the ask appears, and whether the free tier is generous enough to build the trust the paid tier depends on.

Get it wrong in one direction and nobody converts. Wrong in the other and the audience never forms. This is why the membership and donation paths coexist rather than compete — different readers commit at different sizes, and a platform that only accepts one shape of support leaves most of it on the table.

What this demonstrates

Publishing and editorial workflow; membership and payments; community infrastructure; and building a media stack that a very small team can genuinely operate rather than one that needs a department.
