SEO

AI Overviews answered your blog posts. Here's what still works.

If your organic traffic fell off a cliff and your rankings did not move, nothing is broken. The answer is simply arriving before the click.

AI Overviews now appear on 40–46% of searches, including more than 40% of local business queries. On queries that carry one, industry measurements put the click-through drop at around 61% — and even searches without an overview have seen roughly a 41% decline, because the whole results page changed shape.

The strategy that produced traffic for a decade — write the definitive guide, rank it, collect the visits — no longer produces traffic. It produces answers, delivered by somebody else, with your name on them if you are lucky.

What replaced clicks

Citations.

First-party websites account for roughly 44% of AI citations, with listings at about 42%. Position one is no longer a blue link at the top of a page; it is being the source the model quotes. ChatGPT is now the third most common way consumers find local businesses, used by about 45% of them.

So the question is no longer "how do I rank for this?" It is "how do I become the thing that gets quoted when someone asks?"

Those are different problems with different answers.

Six things that actually move citation odds

1. Already rank. Around 92% of AI Overview citations come from pages already in the top ten. AI visibility is not an alternative to SEO — it is a layer on top of it. A page nobody ranks does not get cited.

2. Write for extraction. Short declarative claims. One idea per paragraph. Comparison tables. Q&A blocks with the question as a heading. If a passage cannot be lifted out and still make sense, it will not be lifted out.

3. Delete the hedging. "We believe", "in our opinion", "it could be argued" — these lower the odds a passage gets selected. Models prefer text that states things. So state them, and be right rather than vague.

4. Stay fresh. Content updated within about 30 days gets meaningfully more citations than stale content — one commonly cited figure is 3.2×. Put a visible last-updated date on the page and make it true.

5. Ship structured data. Pages with complete structured data are roughly 36% more likely to appear in AI-generated summaries. Organization, WebSite, Article, LocalBusiness, Service, BreadcrumbList — the ones that still earn something.

6. Be a resolvable entity. Same business name, same logo, same one-line description, same founder, same primary URL, everywhere — your site, your social profiles, every directory. An engine that cannot work out who you are will not name you.

One thing that stopped working

FAQ rich results are gone. Google removed them on 7 May 2026. FAQ schema is not deprecated and costs nothing to keep, but it will not put stars or accordions in your listing any more.

Write the Q&A anyway. It is now the single most extractable content shape there is — just do it for the answer engine, not for the SERP feature.

What this means for a small business

Stop measuring blog posts by sessions. A post that gets quoted in an answer to a buying question is doing its job even if nobody visits it. Measure brand searches and direct traffic instead.

Move budget down the funnel. "How does X work" is now answered without you. "X pricing", "X near me", "hire an X" still convert, and the pages that serve them are worth more than they were two years ago.

Test it directly. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google what you want to be found for. See who gets cited and why. That takes ten minutes and tells you more than a rank tracker.

Fix your listings. Citations split roughly evenly between first-party sites and listings. For a local business, Google Business Profile is around 32% of local ranking signal and the 3-pack gets 126% more traffic than positions four through ten. That is still the highest-return hour available.

Common questions

Should I stop blogging? No. Blog for citation and credibility, not for sessions. Fewer, better, more specific posts — each one genuinely worth quoting.

Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content? It removes you from the answers. If a model cannot read you it cannot cite you, and your competitor gets named instead.

Is this permanent? The specific numbers will move. The direction — answers arriving before clicks — will not.

What is the fastest thing I can do this week? Add visible dates, add structured data, and rewrite your three most important pages so a machine can lift a paragraph out of each one and have it still be true.
